Dear Readers,
wer billig kauft, kauft doppelt, lautet ein Sprichwort. In der Tat gibt es kaum etwas Ärgerlicheres als minderwertige Materialien, die ihre Bestimmung nicht erfüllen. Denn das ist nicht nur teuer, es verhindert auch Qualität – und es ist das Gegenteil von nachhaltigem, ökologischem Wirtschaften. Die Materialien einer Spedition führen ein Schattendasein, dabei haben sie teilweise eine Lebensdauer von Jahrzehnten, obwohl sie für reibungslose Transporte von A nach B tagtäglich beansprucht werden. Sie wer- den geprüft, optimiert und unterlaufen eine ständige Evolution, die Nachhaltigkeit, Wirtschaftlichkeit und Sicherheit in eine Balance bringt. Mit der 21. Ausgabe des ATLAS schenken wir diesen Materialien einen genaueren Blick. Wo die Entwicklung von Materialien hinge- hen kann, zeigt das Interview mit den sym pathischen Nachwuchsforschern von der ETH Zürich. Sie haben ein Solarfahrzeug konstruiert und damit im vergangenen Jahr Australien durchquert. Die Erkenntnisse, die sie dabei gesammelt haben, werden vielleicht auch die Entwicklung der Logistik- materialien weiter voranbringen. Das ATLAS-Team von Gebrüder Weiss wünscht eine spannende Lektüre – und viel Freude an den Einblicken in eine Spedition.
You get what you pay for, so the saying goes. And we all know how infuriating it can be when you’re saddled with low-grade mate- rials that aren’t fit for purpose. Not only do they cost money, they are an obstacle to quality – and that is the opposite of a sus tainable, environment-friendly way to do business. The materials used by a freight forwarder exist in the shadows. Some will have been serving for decades, defying the strain of transporting goods from A to B without a hitch – day in, day out. They are checked, optimized and undergo a process of cons- tant evolution that balances sustainability, economic viability and safety. And so in Issue 21 of ATLAS we afford these materials a little extra attention. Where can the development of materials lead? Our interview with a likeable group of young researchers from ETH Zürich provides some answers. They designed and built a solar-powered vehicle, which last year they took on a trip across Australia. The know- ledge they gained en route may just power the development of logistics materials to the next stage in their own epic journey.
