ATLAS 21 - Material

Wood Wood is one of the oldest buil ding materials used by humans. Pallets are a prime example of this renewable material’s efficient use in the logistics business – especially the standardized EPAL (European Pallet Association) pallets. These are produced to precise specifications: each Euro pallet comprises eleven boards and nine blocks held together with 78 certified special nails arranged in a set nail pattern. Only 17 types of wood are ap proved for the boards, although the blocks may also be made of pressed wood. Most Euro pallets are made from coniferous species like fir, spruce and pine. This is because conifers grow fast and their wood is weather proof and pest-resistant. Most coniferous woods also have good dimensional stability and are easy to cut. Since the use of completely undamaged pal- lets is an important safety requirement both during transport and in high-bay warehou- ses, all Gebrüder Weiss pallets undergo regu- lar checks. If a pallet is damaged, it is either repaired in-house or withdrawn from use.
