What actions will reduce our operational energy requirements?

Efficiency and resource conservation as part of the business model

The transport and logistics industry is energy-intensive and widely characterized by the use of fossil fuels. At Gebrüder Weiss, efficiency and resource conservation have always formed part of our corporate identity – in terms of both envi- ronmental and economic responsibility. In the field of transport, we focus on optimizing the utilization of our trucks’ capacity, minimizing fuel consumption, constant- ly optimizing routes and using technologically sophisticated vehicles. We are thus reducing our energy consumption while at the same time reducing our environmental footprint. In the long term, we are aiming to switch completely to al- ternative drive systems and renewable energies. The limited availability of suitable vehicles, of fuels and of public charging infrastructure, however, is complicating faster implementation of this goal. Until these technologies are widely available, we will use HVO100 as a bridging technology and rely on our current vehicle fleet, which is already highly efficient today. Part of our success also depends on the cooperation of our customers. We offer climate-friendly transport options – but the decisions to use sustainable solutions lies with the cus- tomers in question.

We are also continuously increasing energy efficiency in the area of building management – by expanding our photovoltaic systems and using heat pumps, LED lighting and electric fork- lifts. We record our progress precisely using monitoring tools such as LineMetrics (for energy consumption) and Plexlog (for photovoltaic systems). For transport services, we rely on EcoTransIT – an automated solution for calculating energy consumption and emissions along complex supply chains. Saving energy is also a legal requirement for Gebrüder Weiss – for example as a result of the EU Renewable Ener- gy Directive and national regulations. The regulatory require- ments in the international logistics business are constantly increasing here and demand targeted, resource-efficient solutions.
