EFFICIENT PICKING FOR SMALL PARTS LOGISTICS

How can several thousand orders a day be handled quickly and reliably? With conventional picking methods, it is almost impossible. That is why Gebrüder Weiss (GW) introduced the paperless Pick-by-Light system to meet the special requirements of Nespresso . There are many benefits: Pickers no longer have to scan. This leaves both their hands free and enables them to pick the required shipments in next to no time.

AT A GLANCE: NESPRESSO

Nespresso was founded in 1986 and is an autonomous branch of business of the Nestlé Group. The brand is known all over the world for its coffee system: coffee packaged in aluminum capsules that can only be prepared using special coffee or espresso machines. Today Nespresso employs more than 12,000 people in 64 countries. Approximately half of all employees have customer-facing roles.

THE CHALLENGE

THE CHALLENGE

The particular challenge faced by Nespresso is how to cope with the vast number of daily customer deliveries. The packages are individually put together (or “picked”) in accordance with the wishes of Nespresso customers. At the same time, there are also lots of incoming deliveries to contend with. This calls for ingenious logistics that are beyond the grasp of many companies.

The challenge: ● Lots of small deliveries ● 1,000 articles have to be stocked

● Products must be delivered to customers quickly ● Products must be handled with extreme care (no marks/scratches, packaging must always be arranged so logo points upward)

THE SOLUTION

THE SOLUTION

At its Maria-Lanzendorf (Vienna) location, Gebrüder Weiss operates a Pick-by-Light system especially for Nespresso, making the picking process much easier.

The services at a glance: ● Deliveries made to Nespresso customers throughout Austria: companies, hotels, shops ● 4,800 square meters of storage space for 1,000 different Nespresso articles ● Paperless Pick-by-Light system with high picking speed ● 55 specially trained employees working across two shifts (from 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.)
